Should I think about getting new makeup or stick with my tried & true favorites?
I recently went to Sephora and asked for help choosing makeup for my changing skin. The advisor recommended a few different products, and I really did like how much better my makeup looked. If your longtime favorites aren’t working as well as they used to, consider asking an advisor at Sephora or your local beauty counter to help you try new formulas and application techniques. You may be surprised by what a difference the right makeup can make.
Is it time to re-think your makeup?
You put on your makeup expecting to look refreshed. Instead, foundation settles into fine lines, concealer gathers beneath your eyes, and powder makes your skin look drier. By midday, you may feel as though you looked better before you put any of it on.
Your makeup skills haven’t suddenly disappeared. Skin changes over time, and products that worked beautifully a few years ago may no longer suit the skin you have today.
Why does makeup start behaving differently?
As skin becomes drier and develops more texture, a full-coverage foundation or heavy powder can draw attention to fine lines and uneven areas. Changes in facial volume can also affect how makeup looks: contour and concealer may be harder to blend when the cheeks or areas around the mouth look less full.
A few adjustments may help. Try moisturizing before makeup, using lighter layers of foundation (but give it time to soak in), and applying powder only where you need it. But if you find yourself using more makeup to hide the same concerns every day, you may want to address what’s happening beneath it.
If makeup settles into expression lines: consider BOTOX® Cosmetic
Lines across the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes often become more noticeable when you make expressions. Foundation can collect in those lines, especially as the day goes on.
BOTOX Cosmetic temporarily relaxes targeted muscles to soften certain expression lines. It won’t replace your skin care or change your facial structure, but a thoughtful treatment may help you look more rested while keeping your expressions natural.
If your face looks less full: ask about dermal fillers
Sometimes the concern isn’t a wrinkle at all. If your cheeks have lost fullness or certain facial folds have become more noticeable, adding more concealer or contour may only call attention to the area.
Dermal fillers can restore volume or soften selected folds, depending on your facial anatomy and goals. The aim is balance—not a “filled” look. Dr. Adrian de la Torre can help determine whether filler is appropriate and where a subtle amount might make a difference.
If foundation looks patchy: a chemical peel may help
Rough texture, dullness, and uneven tone can make foundation difficult to apply evenly. A professionally selected chemical peel can exfoliate the skin and improve the appearance of certain texture and discoloration concerns.
Peels vary in strength, and the right choice depends on your skin and how much recovery time you can allow. It’s also important to follow your provider’s instructions about sun protection and when to resume makeup afterward.
You may need less makeup—not more
The right makeup can still be fun and flattering. You may simply find that a lighter touch works better when your skin feels smoother, and the concerns beneath your makeup have been addressed. The difference can be night and day and make all the difference in your ultimate results.
At DrTen20 in Dana Point, we’ll listen to what’s changed in your routine and help you explore whether BOTOX Cosmetic, dermal fillers, a chemical peel, or a combination makes sense for you. The goal is for your makeup to feel like a choice again—not something you need to hide behind.

You might not believe it, but the difference between this woman and the lady below is JUST the makeup she’s wearing – They are the same lady!
In one survey, 36% of makeup-wearing women age 45 and older said they use makeup in part to hide signs of aging. But when foundation starts settling into lines or clinging to dry skin, adding more coverage may draw attention to the very features they hoped to soften.
It’s frustrating when the products you’ve always used stop giving you the look you want. Sometimes a lighter application helps; sometimes it’s worth looking at what your skin needs beneath the makeup.
I recently asked a makeup specialist to recommend products for my changing skin. I tried a few of her suggestions, and the difference was noticeable: my makeup looked smoother and more flattering without needing as much coverage. Sometimes the first step is simply finding products and techniques that suit the skin you have now.
The right amount of makeup on a face that has had a few tweaks with BOTOX and gentle fillers can really be shockingly better. Check out this SAME beauty with better makeup and a few “tweaks” from DrTen20!

Not sure whether BOTOX Cosmetic, filler, or a chemical peel fits what you’re seeing? Start with the concern rather than the treatment name.
| What you’re noticing | Treatment to ask about | What it may help with |
|---|---|---|
| Forehead lines, frown lines, or crow’s feet that show when you make expressions | BOTOX® Cosmetic | Softens selected expression lines by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause them. |
| Cheeks that look less full or facial folds that seem more pronounced | Dermal fillers | Adds volume or softens certain folds, depending on the product and treatment area. |
| Rough texture, dullness, or uneven tone that makes foundation look patchy | Chemical peels | Exfoliates the skin to improve the appearance of certain surface concerns. |
| More than one of these concerns | A personalized treatment plan | Combines treatments when appropriate, with each one addressing a different issue. |
